What Are BN Pack Recyclable Retort Pouches Made Of?

what are recyclable retort pouches made of

To create fully recyclable retort pouches, we shifted to using polyolefin materials like PP and PE. Aluminium was not an option, and paper couldn’t withstand the heat from the steam retort process. These polyolefins are widely recycled in many countries today, making them an eco-friendly choice.

The challenge with polyolefins was that only PP can handle temperatures above 130°C, which is needed for retort processing. This limited us to using PP, as it’s the only material that could withstand the high temperatures.

In 2018, we successfully launched a high-barrier polyolefin film for non-retort uses. The next step was to create a suitable PP solution for retort applications, which took time and innovation.

After over two years of collaboration with our customer, we were able to introduce the first recyclable PP retort pouches to the market in October 2020. These pouches were initially launched for wet cat food.

How are Recyclable Retort Pouches Made?

Material Selection:

Recyclable retort pouches start with high-quality polyolefins like polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). These materials are chosen because they’re both durable and recyclable, making them a great choice for eco-friendly packaging.

You’ll find these materials are strong enough to protect your product, yet can be recycled once the pouch is used, contributing to sustainability efforts.

Layering:

The process involves combining multiple layers of materials to create a sturdy, protective pouch. These layers help provide strength, moisture resistance, and heat protection, ensuring your product remains safe during processing. By layering different materials, the pouch can withstand high temperatures without losing its integrity, making it perfect for the sterilization process.

Barrier Film:

To protect your product from exposure to oxygen and light, a barrier film is added to the pouch. This film is often made from aluminum or high-barrier polymers, which help extend the shelf life of the contents. The barrier ensures that your product stays fresh while still allowing for recyclability, making it a crucial component in maintaining both quality and sustainability.

Molding:

The selected materials are molded into pouches that can endure the intense conditions of retort processing. The molding process shapes the pouch to fit various product needs, ensuring it can handle the high temperatures without compromising the product inside.

This molding is an essential step for creating a pouch that will hold up during sterilization while keeping the packaging flexible and functional.

Sealing:

Once the pouch is formed, it’s heat-sealed to ensure a tight, secure closure. This seal is designed to withstand the high temperatures of the retort process, keeping the product safely sealed inside. The sealing process is critical for preventing leaks and ensuring the product stays intact throughout the sterilization and shipping process.

Testing:

After the pouches are made, each one undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it meets the necessary standards for durability and safety. The testing process checks for heat resistance, sealing integrity, and overall strength to ensure the pouches perform well during retort processing. This ensures that your product remains safe, fresh, and ready for use while also meeting eco-friendly packaging standards.

Advantages of Recyclable Retort Pouches

Eco-Friendly:

Recyclable retort pouches offer an eco-friendly packaging solution. Made from recyclable materials like PP and PE, they reduce plastic waste and support a circular economy. These pouches allow businesses to minimize their environmental impact while ensuring product safety, making them a responsible choice for those looking to adopt sustainable practices.

Affordable and Lightweight:

Recyclable retort pouches provide a cost-effective packaging option. They are lightweight, reducing both shipping and storage costs. Their affordability helps businesses maintain budget-friendly operations while still offering a high-quality product. Additionally, their lightweight design also contributes to lower energy consumption during transportation.

Longer Shelf Life with a Smaller Environmental Footprint:

Recyclable retort pouches enhance product shelf life by offering excellent protection against moisture, light, and oxygen. This ensures products remain fresh longer, helping reduce food waste. The pouch’s design also minimizes its environmental footprint, offering a sustainable option without compromising on performance or product quality.

Attractive to Eco-Conscious Consumers:

With increasing demand for sustainable packaging, recyclable retort pouches appeal to eco-conscious consumers. These pouches align with consumer values, especially among those who prioritize environmentally friendly products. Brands offering recyclable pouches demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, attracting loyal customers who care about reducing their environmental impact.

Disadvantages of Recyclable Retort Pouches

Challenges in Recycling Infrastructure:

Recycling systems in many regions are not equipped to handle the complexities of recyclable retort pouches. These pouches often contain multi-layer materials that require specific processing methods. In areas without advanced recycling facilities, recyclable retort pouches may not be properly processed, reducing their overall effectiveness in waste reduction.

Increased Production Costs for Sustainable Materials:

The production of recyclable retort pouches can be more expensive due to the use of eco-friendly materials like polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). These materials often cost more than traditional plastics, leading to higher production costs. While sustainable, these higher costs can be a barrier for some businesses looking to adopt recyclable packaging.

Limited Compatibility with Certain Materials:

Recyclable retort pouches may not be compatible with all types of products. Some food items or liquids might require more specific packaging materials for optimal freshness and protection. Additionally, the materials used in these pouches may not be suitable for all manufacturing processes, limiting their application for certain industries.

2 Key Concepts of Recyclable Retort Pouch

Material Difference Between Regular and Recyclable Retort Pouches

Regular Retort Pouches: Often made with multi-layer materials that include aluminum or non-recyclable plastics for added barrier protection.

Recyclable Retort Pouches: Made with recyclable materials like polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), which are easier to process in recycling systems. These pouches use advanced barrier films, typically high-barrier polymers, to maintain freshness without relying on non-recyclable materials.

Eco-Friendliness of Recyclable Retort Pouches:

Recyclable retort pouches are an eco-friendly packaging option designed to minimize environmental impact. Made from recyclable materials, they can be processed and reused, reducing waste. These pouches also help lower the carbon footprint by being lightweight, which cuts down on shipping energy.

By using recyclable materials and supporting a circular economy, these pouches contribute to sustainability while maintaining product protection.
